Road tennis is a uniquely Barbadian sport that emerged in the 1930s as an accessible alternative to lawn tennis, which was often restricted to the wealthy due to socioeconomic and racial barriers in colonial Barbados. Invented by local working-class Barbadians, the sport was born out of necessity, with players using makeshift equipment and public spaces like roads, hence the name. Lance Bynoe is often credited as the “Father of Road Tennis” for starting and developing the game.
